Also known as a quill or pirn, these unique bobbins were used to hold thread inside the shuttle as it worked back and forth inside the loom. They are elegantly tapered with a pointed tip at one end and a other end one inch wide and banded in wire with a 3/8 inch centre bore. There is a 2 inch metal band under the thick end.
Rescued from old textile mills across North America, these bobbins collected plenty of character over their years of hard use. Open in the middle to hold a small candle (3/8 inch base), they are available only in their original patina. The surface is lightly varnished and waxed to last a new lifetime as a candle holder.
These bobbins are available either as-is or drilled for a 3/4 inch medium tapered candle. If you want this as a collector’s item, then you should order it un-drilled and cut the base of your candle to fit the small hole in the centre of the bobbin. If you are ordering it as a candle, then we will drill a larger hole for you. Drilling the bobbin will reduce its value as a collector’s item.
Because of their narrow design, these bobbins cannot stand alone, but they can be placed inside a stand of some sort and hold a small candle. They can also be used to create an interesting display all on their own. Check out or wire sconce product to see an example of how they can be used.
Colours range from light wood to dark reddish. If you purchase multiple bobbins we will try to match the patina and colour as closely as possible.
At this price you can grab a whole bunch and let your imagination run wild.
